You will come across a 1997 Toyota RAV4 with a 5S-FE
engine with a code P0401 stored in memory. This code
indicates a low EGR flow operation. Do not be mislead
into thinking that the EGR components are not working
or the EGR passage may be partially clogged. Pull the
EGR backpressure sense tube and cut it open to see if
any carbon has clogged the hose and is preventing the
back pressure valve from properly controlling the
operation of the EGR valve.

You may come across a 1997 Mitsibishi Eclipse with a 2.0L
with a CEL lamp on with a code P1486. This code indicates
a pinched line due to the quick build-up of EVAP vacuum as
seen by the ECM. Do not waste too much time looking for a
pinched hose. Inspect the fuel filler neck for a stuck closed
EVAP mechanical purge valve. This valve is spring loaded and
will close the EVAP purge line during vehicle fueling when
the gas cap is removed. The resolve is to replace the entire
fuel filler neck assembly.
